WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Burgess Owens (UT-04) co-sponsored the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act, which will allow for unflavored and flavored whole milk and reduced-fat milk to be offered in school cafeterias in addition to already existing low-fat and fat-free milk options.
The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act of 2023 highlights the many health benefits and nutrients milk provides to young Americans, including better bone health, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease or Type 2 diabetes. According to the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans, milk is a source of three out of four under-consumed nutrients – calcium, potassium, and vitamin D. No other beverage naturally comes close to this level of nutritional value.
“Milk is rich in essential nutrients critical for enhancing bone health, reducing the risk for cardiovascular diseases, and Type 2 diabetes in young Americans,” said Rep. Owens. “I am proud to support the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act to ensure my 16 grandkids and children across America are well nourished and have access to healthy dairy options in schools.”
