U.S. Census Bureau estimates show that the nation’s population of older adults is on the rise while the number of children is declining. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and older increased by 13%, contrasted with a 1.7% drop for those under 18. The population of older adults has seen a dramatic rise in the last century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study finds that nearly half of older Americans, about 28 million, may eventually rely on long-term services and support. More than one-third are expected to require nursing home care in the future.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an organization focused on insurance education. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
